Roblox – This is a 3D gaming website that is completely free. The twist is that the games are built by the users! The site is easy to use for beginners. You don’t need to know how to use Photoshop or other 3D modeling software. Everything can be done using the Roblox Studio software for Mac and Windows. This article will explain why Roblox is such a great platform. I’ll also share my top plugins, tutorials, and screencasts to help you get started.

Great Sample Game

Call to Robloxia 5 – Roblox At War gives a glimpse of the capabilities of Roblox. This FPS was played more than 14 million times.

How to Install Roblox

Roblox is available for Mac and PC at the moment, but will soon be available for iPad. Depending on which browser you use, Roblox will require that you install the browser plugin or desktop client to play the games.

You will also need to install Roblox Studio. This is the free software package that Roblox uses to create Roblox games.

Roblox Studio supports plugins that you have created. The CFrame plugin allows you to move objects in 3D space using values. After downloading the zip file, open Roblox Studio and select Tools > Select Plugins Folder. The zip file will be extracted to this folder. You’ll see a “CF” icon in Roblox Studio’s toolbar if the plugin was installed correctly.

Getting Started

Before you start your first Roblox game, I recommend that you learn more information about how to use Roblox. This Roblox Wiki can be a great starting resource.

You will then need to create an account. Although technically this step is optional, you must register in order to publish your games on Roblox. An account is also required for certain other features.

Roblox Studio

It’s easy to get lost once you are in the studio. Select File >New to get started in your next game. This should look like this:

Roblox Wiki is a great resource for getting started with this.

The blue icon with the letters “CF”, is that you? This is the CFrame tool. The box will appear if you click on it. Let’s try it: Select Insert > Object> Part, to insert two pieces of your choice. Then use the CFrame tool for pushing the parts together. Rotate them too.

The Explorer and Properties panels will be required. These panels are not visible? Click View > Property and View > Explorer to make them visible. Two new panels will appear to the left of Roblox Studio.

You can play around with the interface and then go to the Wiki article for more information. Roblox also offers screencasts.

Finally, the fun part! Your game’s building is key. This screencast will help you get started. I recommend it as a starting point.

The screencast below will show you how to build a house and how easy it is. You can get creative and build a larger house and possibly some furniture.

Simple house.

This house is more complicated. The helipad is a great addition!

This collection contains building tutorials.

Ok, you know how to build objects. But, in order for them to move and do cool things, you need to program them!

There are many resources to help you get started. The Roblox Wiki is the first resource. This Wiki is edited and authored by Roblox. Roblox uses “Roblox Lua”, which is a dialect of Lua, a lightweight programming language.

This absolute beginner’s guide to scripting is the best tutorial. There’s an entire community that can help you as well!

This is the best place to start if you prefer screencasts.

You don’t have to stop there – you can check out the entire playlist!

Here is a quick script to create a GUI object on the screen.

Here’s another data persistence program that is more complex:

Although it may seem like a different language, it is actually quite easy to learn. Check out the videos and links above.

Trading Currency

This is a great feature. You may have noticed that there are two currencies in-game: Tickets and Robux. You can trade between them using the Trade Currency screen, which can be found in the Money section on your user page. If you know the right techniques you could even make a profit.

Pay close attention to:

  • The rate ratio: This is how much you will get if your trades are successful. The TIX rate, which is 12.881, means that 100 Tickets will be traded for 8 Robux (100 / 12.881). The BUX rate, however, is 12.771, which means that 100 Robux can be traded for about 1277 tickets (100 * 12.771).
  • Market Orders vs. Limit OrdersMarket Orders are instantly traded at the market rate. Limited Orders let you input the amount you wish to trade and the price you would like. This type of trade can take a lot of time, and it could never happen if you do something crazy.
  • Your daily earnings each day that you log in, you automatically receive 10 tickets and one ticket for every person who plays your online game. You can subscribe to the (paid).Builders ClubYou’ll automatically get Robux every day if you do.
  • You can use Robux and Tickets to purchase various in-game items like hats. Some of these items are limited in currency. To get more Tickets, you can also use your Tickets to promote your games!

Roblox users have the option to join groups, which can include building and war groups as well as groups that teach Roblox Lua. To form a group, it costs 100 Robux

Here’s an example of a group page.

I use groups to help my fan base. Whenever I update a game I make a “group shout” (a message sent to all members of the group) to explain the update. This gets my fans excited to play my games again.

Roblox offers many unique tools and features. Roblox is multipurpose. Some users have accounts to play games. Others use it to build and play with physics or to socialize.

Roblox’s blog will keep you informed about new updates and provide inspiration for building your own games. Email or tweet Roblox staff if you have any questions or concerns!

Roblox is a great place for a beginner game designer. Roblox’s easy coding language, intuitive editor, and friendly staff make it a great place to start if you are a new game designer. Although there is much to be learned, I can guarantee that you will be able to navigate the site and create your own games quickly if you visit all of the links or blogs mentioned above.
